Here are some ways Nebraskans celebrated World Breastfeeding Week 2011: The New Breastfeeding Report Card from the CDC was released and Nebraska was one of the leading states for baby-friendly facilities! On Saturday, August 6th, the Midtown La Leche League of Omaha and Ted & Wally's Premium Ice Cream are hosting the Big Latch On & Ice Cream Social. The Big Latch On is a worldwide event, happening at 10:30 AM on August 6th, 2011, that aims to break the record for most babies nursing simultaneously, as well as raise awareness for breast feeding. WIC-Community Action Partnership of Mid-NE, Good Samaritan Hospital, and Mary Lanning Hospital partnered together to post a billboard promoting "Breastfeeding...Anytime...Anywhere" for the month of August in Kearney, Hastings and Lexington.
Grand Island WIC is hosting Breastfeeding Awareness Day at the Conestoga Mall and are having agencies from Hastings, Kearney, and WIC clinics from surrounding areas are joining them. They are making flyers, stickers, and will have message boards for moms to leave affirmations to other folks about breastfeeding. There will be plenty of prizes, and water bottles with breastfeeding slogans on them.
World Breastfeeding Week Celebration - Good Samaritan Hospital's Breastfeeding Mom's Group celebrated World Breastfeeding Week this week during their support group. Many local businesses who support breastfeeding donated prizes to give away to breastfeeding moms and babies. Businesses included; Time for Baby, Styles for Legs, and 2in1 Photography. 21 couples of moms and babies attended! Everyone pitched in to bring treats that increase mother's milk supply and we had yummy treats for moms and babies with MSPI. Everyone had a blast! Breastfeeding Awareness Day at the Mall - WIC-Community Action Partnership of Mid-NE, Good Samaritan Hospital, Kearney Area La Leche League, and Time for Baby are partnering together to have a breastfeeding information/resource booth at the Hilltop Mall in Kearney on Sat Aug 13 from 1-4pm. The booth will be staffed with WIC breastfeeding peer counselors, breastfeeding moms, and lactation consultants to share breastfeeding information and let people know that you can breastfeed anytime...anywhere. Door prizes donated from Time for Baby and Medela will be given away. The booth will stay up all month with breastfeeding information and handouts. WIC-Community Action Partnership of Mid-NE is also hosting a "Breastfeeding Day at the Park" in Lexington on Sun Aug 14 from 4-6pm. WIC breastfeeding peer counselors will be attending and provide breastfeeding games, information, and door prizes.
BryanLGH Medical Center is doing their part! They have posted display boards on each unit giving attention to world breastfeeding week. Their gift shop is giving 20% off on selected breastfeeding items (not pumps). The staff are getting Milkyway candies and pins that say various supportive statements about breastfeeding. They are also handing out Medela promotional materials for World Breastfeeding Week. They will be featured on Channel 8 (KLKNTV) news on Sunday night at 10pm (Last segment of the program) and again on Monday morning to discuss the new CDC report card and promote their Baby-Friendly status. To go with the World Breastfeeding Week Theme of "Talk To Me: Breastfeeding a 3-D Experience," the Omaha VNA has created 3-D cell phones with their information as well as the Nebraska Breastfeeding Coalition's info.
The Douglas Sarpy County WIC theme this year is "Breastfeeding a Gift of Love". The OneWorld WIC office is doing a Quilt project for all mothers that are breastfeeding or have breastfed; they are invited to write a short note why they enjoy(ed) breastfeeding and each patch will be quilted together and be on display the last Week of August.
