- Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI):
- The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) is a global program sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to encourage and recognize hospitals and birthing centers that offer an optimal level of care for lactation. The BFHI assists hospitals in giving breastfeeding mothers the information, confidence, and skills needed to successfully initiate and continue breastfeeding their babies and gives special recognition to hospitals that have done so. www.babyfriendlyusa.org
- A guidance document for health care facilities may be downloaded to assist with overcoming barriers and achieving success on the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding. The report, completed with the government support, is a compilation of strategies used by the existing Baby-Friendly facilities.

www.cdc.gov/breastfeeding/ This site has a guide for maternity practices in the hospital. Crib cards prototypes promoting long term breastfeeding for boys and girls are available. The travel section also includes information about mothers traveling with their breastfeeding infants and those that are traveling without their infants but with their pumped breastmilk.
The American Academy of Pediatric (AAP) Section on Breastfeeding: http://www.aap.org/breastfeeding/ highlights the benefits of breastfeeding, the contraindications and clarifies the conditions that may be thought to be contraindications but in fact are not, and outlines how pediatricians can promote breastfeeding in their practice.
