Azusa, first time mother of a 4 month old son

Azusa content photoWhile breastfeeding is such a natural way to feed my baby, it does not mean that I found it easy in the beginning. When I was pregnant, my friend encouraged me to take a breastfeeding class. The class helped me to learn and be able to ask questions. Then when my son was born, I was glad that the hospital had lactation consultants on staff. They were very supportive. However, moms are in the hospital such a short time. I had to figure out what to do once I left the hospital. My son lost too much weight and my nipples were sore. Later, I learned that some other moms and babies have these same problems.

A good friend of mine who has breastfed her 3 children suggested that I see a board certified lactation consultant. It was very helpful to see someone who specializes just in breastfeeding. I learned that my son had a slight tongue tie, which was interfering with breastfeeding. We had the frenulum under his tongue clipped and ever since he has been gaining weight and latching fine.

I would tell all moms to get a lot of help from family, friends, and your health care providers. Also, it would be nice to find a mom’s breastfeeding group to attend. It is enjoyable to spend time with other mothers and babies. Breastfeeding may be a lot of work at first, but once you are both good at it, you will be glad you stayed with it.
