Azusa, first time mother of a 4 month old son

Azusa content photoWhile breastfeeding is such a natural way to feed my baby, it does not mean that I found it easy in the beginning. When I was pregnant, my friend encouraged me to take a breastfeeding class. The class helped me to learn and be able to ask questions. Then when my son was born, I was glad that the hospital had lactation consultants on staff. They were very supportive. However, moms are in the hospital such a short time. I had to figure out what to do once I left the hospital. My son lost too much weight and my nipples were sore. Later, I learned that some other moms and babies have these same problems.

Chelsea, nursing mother of two

Chelsea content photoI know that some of my health care providers have been confused because I have chosen to tandem nurse my two boys. My first son was 24 months old when his baby brother was born. Rachel – first time mom of a 3 month old baby

Rachel content photoI found that I received great help from the lactation consultant in the hospital when I gave birth to my son. She offered very factual information in a direct way. It was just what I needed. The pediatrician’s office has also been very helpful. They have provided me with lactation help and they even have a special nursing room if you need to feed your baby while at their office. Health care providers need to stop and think how exciting but overwhelming it is to start a family. They need to share wisdom and information in a kind, reassuring manner and convey a “you can do it” spirit.
