When I was pregnant with my first baby, I read everything I could find. All the information about breastfeeding made sense to me. However, most of my friends and family were not breastfeeding their babies. I decided that I would show them that I could do it and that it was a good thing for my babies! Luckily, I found a support system, because I had some problems and I needed someone to turn to for help.
I encourage moms to go to La Leche League meetings before their baby is born. They can meet other moms who are breastfeeding or who have some of the same questions. My own WIC breastfeeding peer counselor encouraged me to be patient and keep going. I found it also helped to set realistic goals. Some moms might tell themselves they are going to breastfeed for 3 months and then decide whether they will continue. I told myself, “I will breastfeed for 6 months and then decide what to do.” Patience came in handy. And I learned that it is okay to ask for help. We were not meant to do this alone!
