Chelsea, nursing mother of two |
When I was pregnant with my first baby, I read everything I could find. All the information about breastfeeding made sense to me. However, most of my friends and family were not breastfeeding their babies. I decided that I would show them that I could do it and that it was a good thing for my babies! Luckily, I found a support system, because I had some problems and I needed someone to turn to for help.

I wanted to breastfeed because I think it is a natural way of raising my son - the closeness and bonding is beneficial for both of us. As he gets older, I find that it is very convenient. There are no bottles or cans of formula to carry around. Whenever my son gets hungry, I just find someplace with a bit of privacy (even my car) and feed him. That way he gets fresh, warm milk right on the spot! I never have to wash bottles when I am with him, and I never have to go to the kitchen in the middle of the night. I just put him on my breast. It is that easy!

I have found breastfeeding to be amazing, rewarding and overwhelming! When I found out I was pregnant I knew I would breastfeed because I knew it would provide a great bonding experience, plus I wanted to ensure my baby has the best nutrition. But I would have to say that finances entered into the decision as well. It has been very nice not to budget in formula expense. Especially when my own milk is free!

After I was unable to get pregnant on my own, I turned to fertility treatments to help us conceive and received a lot of support and encouragement from a co-worker, and soon to be friend, who was in the midst of treatments herself. Imagine my surprise when we both got pregnant - and were due on the same day! When Tessa's twin boys arrived early, I did my best to support my friend through the early days in the NICU, her pumping, and those first few weeks of motherhood.
